What to See in Yoichi

Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery and Wineries

Twenty wineries have opened in Yoichi Town (as of March 2026). What to check when visiting distilleries and wineries is summarized in Distilleries and Wineries in Yoichi from Otaru.

Yoichi Space Museum and Michi-no-Eki Space Apple Yoichi

A “Michi-no-Eki” (roadside station) is a facility along a road that offers a place to rest and local information. Space Apple Yoichi is at 6-4-1 Kurokawa-cho, Yoichi, and the Yoichi Space Museum is on the same grounds. It is about a 7-minute walk from JR Yoichi Station to the Space Museum.

The Yoichi Space Museum’s viewing period for fiscal 2026 is listed as April 18 to November 30. However, it is closed on Mondays (the next day if Monday is a public holiday) and on temporary closure days. Because November 30, 2026 falls on a Monday, the last day for general viewing is November 29. General viewing is suspended from December 1, 2026 to April 16, 2027.

The shop at the Michi-no-Eki is open 9:00–17:00 from April 18 to November 2, 2026, and 9:30–17:30 from November 3 to April 16, 2027. From November 9, 2026 to April 12, 2027, it is closed on Mondays (the next day if Monday is a public holiday). It is closed over the New Year holidays, from December 28 to January 3.

Former Shimo-Yoichi Unjoya and Fugoppe Cave

An unjoya was a building that served as the base for merchants who held the contract for trading with the Ainu people on behalf of the Matsumae domain in the Edo period. The Former Shimo-Yoichi Unjoya is at 10 Irifune-cho, Yoichi, and is open from April 11 to December 13 in fiscal 2026. Opening hours are 9:00–16:30 (last admission). It is closed every Monday and the day after a public holiday (open if Monday is a public holiday). Admission is 300 yen for adults and 100 yen for elementary, junior high, and high school students. Yoichi Town states that the Former Shimo-Yoichi Unjoya was built in 1853 and is the only surviving unjoya. It is a 10-minute walk from the Chuo Bus stop “Yoichi Yakuba-mae,” and there is parking for 5 cars.

Fugoppe Cave is at 87 Sakae-cho, Yoichi. The opening period, hours, closed days, and admission for fiscal 2026 are the same as for the Former Shimo-Yoichi Unjoya. A visit takes about 30 minutes, there is parking for 10 cars, and it is a 1-minute walk from the Chuo Bus stop “Fugoppe Dokutsu-mae.” Photography is prohibited inside the facility. The cave has more than 800 carvings, and analysis of the excavated materials indicates that it is a site of the Epi-Jomon period, roughly 2,000 to 1,500 years ago. In fiscal 2026, it is open until December 13. If you plan to visit the historic sites together, check the opening period first.

Rosoku-iwa, Ebisu-iwa and Daikoku-iwa, and Cape Shiripa

Rosoku-iwa (Candle Rock) is a rock 43 m high standing in the sea about 500 m off Yoichi. It is about 15 minutes by car from JR Yoichi Station, and if you drive, you can use the free Rosoku-iwa Observation Parking Lot.

Ebisu-iwa and Daikoku-iwa are rocks lined up in the shallows 10-odd meters from the shore at Shiroiwa-cho. Cape Shiripa is a cape that juts out on the west side of Yoichi Bay. If you go around the coast, checking each location on its official page before you set out will help you avoid getting lost. Because Rosoku-iwa is offshore, you view it from the observation parking lot that the town points visitors to. Ebisu-iwa and Daikoku-iwa are in a different place from Cape Shiripa, so do not treat them as a single site; check their locations separately.

Fruit Picking

If you plan to include fruit picking in Yoichi or Niki, Fruit Picking in Yoichi and Niki covers the seasons and what to check for each facility.

From Yoichi to Shakotan

Hokkaido Chuo Bus operates the Shakotan Line, which runs from JR Otaru Station via Yoichi Station to Bikuni Terminal. The Shakotan Town Community Bus began service on October 1, 2023. The summer 2026 timetable runs from April 1 to November 30, and some “reservation-only” runs require a telephone reservation by 17:00 the day before. Same-day reservations are not accepted. Shakotan Town states that the trip from JR Otaru Station to Bikuni Terminal takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. To reach Cape Kamui by public transport, check the Chuo Bus to Bikuni Terminal and the Shakotan Town Community Bus beyond it separately.

At Cape Kamui Nature Park, the walking path from the Nyonin Kinsei Gate to the tip of the cape is closed from October 5, 2026 to early April 2027. The period may change depending on the weather and the progress of construction. Opening hours change from month to month; from December to March they are 10:00–15:00, with last entry at 14:00. They may change depending on the weather. According to the park, the walking path beside the parking lot and the viewing plaza remain available during the construction period. However, since you cannot go as far as the tip of the cape, do not assume the usual walking time if you visit on or after October 5, 2026.

What to check about Cape Kamui is summarized in Shakotan Peninsula & Cape Kamui, and the sea urchin season and how to check restaurants are covered in Shakotan Sea Urchin Bowls.
