Otaru in Winter

In winter, conditions in Otaru differ from summer not only in the snowy scenery but also in the shoes you need for walking, travel times and event dates. The Otaru Tourism Association defines winter as December to February. It is easier to plan these three months as a mix of snowy town strolls, illuminations and skiing.

What to Know Before Visiting Otaru in Winter

Otaru City describes winter as “a season with lots of snow and low temperatures.” It recommends dressing warmly in winter coats or jackets and bringing shoes that won’t slip on snowy roads.

Otaru City advises walking carefully and slowly on winter roads. Allow plenty of travel time. Otaru City also provides information on anti-slip gear that attaches to shoes.

If you travel by car, you need to check winter road conditions separately from the precautions for pedestrians. If you plan to rent a car, Rental Cars and Winter Roads in Otaru summarizes where to check on snowy-road driving and road information.

The 2026–27 “Blue Canal” runs from November 1, 2026 to January 31, 2027. The venue is the stretch of Otaru Canal from Asakusa Bridge to Chuo Bridge. The lights are on from sunset until 22:30.

The 2027 dates, February 6 to 13, have been announced. The venues and hours for 2027 have not yet been announced. Before the event, check the latest information on the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival page of the official Hokkaido tourism site.

Otaru Canal and Strolling the Town in Winter

Otaru Canal is an easy anchor for sightseeing in the city center in winter, too. In 2026–27, the “Blue Canal” lights up the canal in blue from Asakusa Bridge to Chuo Bridge.

If you walk from the canal toward Sakaimachi Street, allow time on the assumption that the roads are snowy. Combining indoor stops makes it easier to change your plans if the weather turns bad.

Around Sakaimachi, see also our articles on Kitaichi Glass and Otaru Music Box Museum. If you head toward Ironai, Otaru Art Base is another option.

Otaru Snow Light Path Festival

Otaru Snow Light Path Festival is a winter event in which candles are lit across the snowy town. The 2027 dates, February 6 to 13, have been announced.

In 2026, it was held at venues across the city, including the canal, from 17:00 to 21:00. Do not simply reuse the 2026 information for the 2027 venues and hours; check the organizers’ latest information before the event.

You will walk more around the venues. After dark, watch your footing on snowy roads and don’t underestimate the travel time.

Easy Places to Visit on Snowy Days

On days when it is hard to stay outside for long, you can work indoor facilities into your route.

For the aquarium, see Otaru Aquarium; for art and historic architecture, Otaru Art Base. For glass, see Kitaichi Glass, and for music boxes, Otaru Music Box Museum. Details are in each individual article.

Opening hours and closing days differ by facility. Some change only in winter, so check each facility’s official website, linked from its article.

Combining Skiing and Hot Springs

Otaru City covers ski resorts in its winter information for the city. To compare resorts beyond Otaru, including Kiroro and Niseko, see Ski Resorts You Can Reach from Otaru.

If you want to add a day-use hot spring bath at Asarigawa Onsen, Asarigawa Onsen summarizes each facility’s reception hours and how to get there.

Check Winter Road Conditions If You’re Driving

Travel times change with winter road conditions. Otaru City’s winter information also lists roads that are closed in winter.

If you plan to drive toward Yoichi, Shakotan or Niseko, check From Otaru to Yoichi, Shakotan & Niseko and Rental Cars and Winter Roads in Otaru first. In bad weather, don’t assume you can travel as planned; you need to decide based on the latest road, rail and bus information.
